Is Asterion a Linux distribution?
No, Asterion is a desktop productivity app built for Linux, not an entire operating system. We call it a “personal operating system” as a metaphor for organizing your daily routines, habits, and goals in one unified space. Explore the feature overview to see everything it can do.
Where can I download an installer?
Pre-built standalone packages (such as RPMs, Flatpaks, or AppImages) aren’t currently hosted on this website. If you have a source copy of Asterion, you can easily get up and running by following our step-by-step Linux installation guide.
How does the gamified XP and leveling system work?
Asterion turns your everyday productivity into an RPG! You earn Experience Points (XP) whenever you complete tasks: claiming quests (+25 to +100 XP depending on difficulty), ticking subtasks (+15 XP), daily habit check-ins (+30 XP), reflections (+20 XP), completing projects (+250 XP), and unlocking achievements (+100 to +10,000 XP). Do I need an account or Ollama to plan my day?
Not at all. Asterion is completely local and private—there are no accounts, cloud logins, or subscriptions. Ollama is entirely optional; you can organize your days, track habits, and plan quests right away without setting up AI. Follow our getting started guide to jump straight in.
Why does my menu shortcut fail?
Linux desktop application shortcuts require exact file paths. If the application folder was moved or uses a custom path, the default shortcut won’t launch. You can generate a working shortcut for your specific folder in seconds using our launcher helper. If you ever move the folder later on, just run it again.
Where did my goal or quest go?
It’s likely tucked behind an active filter! In the Goals screen, switch your filters to “All Areas” and “All Timeframes”. In Quests, switch the filter to “All Quests”. Completed quests can be found under “Cleared Quests”. Also note that Daily Action goals naturally reset each morning. Learn more in our goals and quests guide.
Can I record yesterday’s habit?
Habit check-ins are designed for real-time daily consistency—you can check in for today (+30 XP), but there is currently no option to backdate past days. You can always review all your recorded streaks and consistency in your habit history.
Why is Ollama connected but not answering?
Even if Asterion detects that your local Ollama server is running, the selected model might not be downloaded or might be timing out. Run ollama list in your terminal to verify that the model name matches your selection in Settings, and test the model directly. For step-by-step help, check our AI troubleshooting guide.
Is a JSON archive a complete backup?
No. JSON exports are lightweight snapshots that do not include subtask checklists or historical habit logs, and restoring from JSON does not preserve every field. For a lossless, complete backup of your database, settings, and uploads, follow our full backup procedure.
Are my notes encrypted?
Asterion protects your privacy by storing everything locally with restricted file permissions, but the SQLite database file itself is not encrypted. If you need encryption at rest, we recommend placing your data directory on an encrypted drive or LUKS volume. Read more in Privacy and data.
Can I sync a bank or use this on Windows?
Asterion is built around privacy and offline control, so the Finance screen uses manual entry rather than live bank connections. Asterion is developed and tested for Linux (Fedora KDE); Windows and macOS are not officially supported.
What does Asterion cost, and what is its licence?
